NHMRC – Ideas Grant Workshop
A Workshop to Help You Meet High Scoring Criteria and Avoid Common Pitfalls
Our NHMRC Ideas Grant Application workshop
The NHMRC Ideas Grant seeks innovative studies to produce outputs and outcomes that will advance or impact the research or health area. We have created a specific, interactive, activity-based workshop that helps you to write the best proposal. Our Ideas Grant Workshop outlines the essential requirements and elements to include in the three supplementary sections. During the workshop, participants will have time to work on their applications and refine these statements under our guidance and instruction.
The objective of the Ideas Grant scheme is to support innovative research projects addressing a spceific question(s).
The expected outcomes of the scheme are:
- innovative and creative research
- funding of researchers at all career stages
- funding any area of health and medical research from discovery to implementation
Biggest Challenges
Typically with this type of grant, we have found that the applicant is not clear on what constitutes innovation and how to clearly show that their idea is new, different, and creative. We have developed proprietary models and processes that will show you exactly how you can identify your innovative approach and show this in a compelling way—ultimately leaving you with a clear, succinct and well-structured application.
This interactive workshop is designed to empower researchers with the insights and skills needed to craft competitive NHMRC Ideas Grant applications. Leveraging key feedback from grant assessors, this session will focus on addressing the characteristics of high-scoring applications while helping participants overcome the pitfalls often seen in low-scoring submissions.
What You Will Learn:
- Clarity and Impact: Craft concise, clear, and engaging responses tailored to the Ideas Grant scheme, avoiding jargon and technical density.
- Research Quality Excellence: Develop well-defined research aims, robust hypotheses, and coherent methodologies that align with objectives and resources.
- Showcasing Innovation: Effectively articulate novel ideas and innovative methods that stand out to assessors.
- Highlighting Significance: Demonstrate transformative potential and clearly connect your project’s outcomes to bigger-picture goals.
- Building Capability: Showcase your team’s expertise, collaboration, and capacity to deliver ambitious, high-impact research.
This workshop addresses key challenges that have led to poor outcomes for many applicants, including:
- Overly technical or incoherent applications
- Misaligned research plans and aims
- Weak justifications for significance and innovation
- Insufficient demonstration of team capability

Principal & Founder
Tamika is the Principal and Founder of the Research Impact Academy, a global organisation, based in Australia, that helps researchers and research organisations achieve their goals. She is a passionate advocate for research impact and has over 15 years of experience in the field.
Tamika began her career as a researcher in the field of health. She quickly became disillusioned with the traditional approach to research, which she felt was too focused on publication and not enough on impact and left academia to pursue a career in knowledge translation, where she worked to bridge the gap between research and practice.
In 2014, Tamika founded Knowledge Translation Australia, which later rebranded as the Research Impact Academy. The academy provides a range of services to help researchers and research organisations achieve their goals, including training and development, consulting, coaching, membership, and events.
Under Tamika’s leadership, the Research Impact Academy has helped researchers to secure millions of dollars in research funding and to make a real-world impact. She is a respected thought leader in the field of research impact and is regularly invited to speak at conferences and events around the world.
Tamika is a strong advocate for the importance of research impact. She believes that research should be used to solve real-world problems and to improve people’s lives. She is committed to helping researchers and research organisations achieve their goals and to making a positive impact on the world.
