We have been running online impact workshops for over 5 years, so we know a little about it. Online training and workshops are different, you can’t simply move your offline training to a full day Zoom session. In fact, Zoom fatigue is a thing, and according to behaviour analyst Laura Dudley, “the exhaustion experienced on zoom is because of the absence of the nonverbal cues that we typically rely on during person to person conversations”.
Bringing style to online training
Vital to the success of virtual research impact training is the atmosphere you create, presentation style used, the structure of the content and its delivery, and the planning and timing of the sessions to ensure a fun, vibrant and enjoyable experience in a virtual format.
Concentration levels, exhaustion and focus have been proven to affect our abilities to work online for long spurts, that’s why we have tailored our training and our format specifically for the online environment.

This live and online workshop will introduce you to the fundamentals of research impact and help you understand what it is, how you can plan to create it, and how to easily capture and communicate impact to take your work to the next level.
This half or full-day workshop looks at how organisations are developing structures, processes and capacity to meet the growing demands of planning for, capturing and reporting on Research Impact

This workshop is designed to guide and advise academics on communicating the research impact they have achieved across the research pipeline.
This workshop supports participants through the process of planning their application, writing a vision and knowledge gain sections, writing a compelling impact narratives in your track record, and showcasing leadership contributions.

Workshop structure
When delivering our online impact training, we have found our participants favour short sessions spaced over a few days. This has the benefit of providing time during the day for other activities and doing tasks and preparation between the workshop sessions. That said, it is up to you how you want us to structure the course. To help, we recommend the following options for full-day workshops:
Full-day workshops
There are several options to choose, for example:
- (2 sessions) Two sessions of three hours for two days
- (3 sessions) Three sessions of two hours for three days
- (4 sessions) Four sessions of 90 minutes for four days
Half-day and seminars usually work out ok on the one day and with a small break mid-session.
Actions not just words
There is a lot of theory and a lot of research evidence on how to create and evaluate research impact. Theories and frameworks alone will not show you how to achieve it. When creating impact, we have to work with people which means that we have to be flexible, work in ways that match behaviour, and consider personalities and bureaucracies.
Studies have shown flexibility and personalisation of strategies is necessary. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) impact assessment collected 6679 impact case studies. Analysis of these case studies revealed over 3709 different pathways to impact, highlighting the individual nature of how we create research impact.

Evaluation
This allows us to examine our performance, and to provide feedback regarding the value of the workshop to the individual and/or their organisation.
Implementation
During the workshop participants will work on relevant elements for their projects. Participants will leave with ideas and a plan of next steps to be undertaken. In some cases, all implementation may be possible during the workshop period.
Slides and activity handouts
Participants will have a valuable resource to refer back to as they implement their new knowledge.
One on one coaching session
Access tailored implementation support in a follow-up coaching session. All workshops include a follow-up coaching session to cover any questions and concerns and to facilitate the implementation process.
Action plan
Participants will use action items developed throughout the workshop to create their plan for the coming months. The plan is designed in a purposeful and strategic way to help progress learning and make sure that time out for this workshop is not wasted, but instead leveraged.
