ARC Grant Consults

Discovery Projects and DECRA Grants

The Australian Research Council Discovery Projects include sections whereby the applicant must outline the potential benefits of the research including the advancement in knowledge, economic, commercial, environmental, social and/or cultural benefits for Australia and international communities, along with the potential contribution to the Australian Government’s National Science and Research Priorities. These benefit sections constitute 15% of the application score and should not be taken lightly.

Writing about benefits requires a different approach than typical scientific writing and must be in a language that can be understood by the public and the Minister, this type of writing can be difficult to master.

What people say about our consulting

Feedback from our consulting clients

The team at Research Impact Academy are professional, thorough, and effective, and really lifted up my grant application.

Hannah Badland, RMIT University

I have just had my 1:1 consult with Tamika and wanted to say thank you for facilitating both the training webinar and the consultations with Research Impact Academy and Tamika. I will be finishing my PhD in the next 6-8 months and whilst at first I was hesitant to sign up, feeling like I didn’t have enough to consider or plan for, I’m so glad I did. The training itself helped me to understand about what impact is, how to plan for it and the different ways of capturing the impact data. The consultation with Tamika was brilliant- Tamika offered me so many insights about what to do with my PhD work- I had some draft ideas but now it will be more refined, and I will be able to plan for capturing the evidence of impact moving forward.

We found the ‘in-person’ meeting the most valuable aspect of our service with the Research Impact Academy. Articulating impact is one of the hardest things to do in grant applications. Through a stimulating discussion, RIA were able to coach us through exactly what impact our project would have, and how to incorporate this into our application early and often. We had previously been unable to articulate this so clearly. Our interaction with RIA improved our grant considerably, however I learnt many skills in generic grant writing that I will be able to apply for future applications and that I can share with my research students.
